Chicago Medical Dermatology: Rosacea & Your Skin

In Chicago, medical dermatology professionals at NIMA Skin institute are passionate about your skin care needs. For this reason we want to properly educate you on the skin conditions we treat here in Chicago. Medical dermatology conditions are often mistaken for cosmetic imperfections. For instance, Rosacea is a common skin condition we provide treatment for, however many of our patients are unaware of what Rosacea is. In fact, most people are known to mistake Rosacea for adult acne. Below you will find information on Rosacea, what causes it and even a few suggested prevention methods.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea (rose-AY-sha) is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling usually on the central face.

What Causes Rosacea?

The causes of Rosacea vary from person to person, however a few major "triggers" of Rosacea are alcoholic beverages, spicy food, extremely cold weather or even a hot and sunny day.

What does Rosacea look like?

There are several different forms of Rosacea. For some, Rosacea comes in the form of redness or bumps usually found on the cheeks, forehead, nose, or chin. For others, the eyes may become watery and itchy. Some even have visible blood vessels on their face. Rosacea patients normally have very sensitive skin that becomes easily irritated by skin care products and even treatment methods.

How can Rosacea be controlled?

Being that Rosacea is associated with sensitive skin, patients should only use fragrance free skin care products. Gentle skin care methods, wearing sunscreen daily, applying medication prior to using skin care products, and drying skin daily after a gentle cleansing are helpful. Also be sure to keep track of all products used on your skin in order to keep track of possible skin irritants and avoid any known triggers.

There are several medical and cosmetic treatments for patients afflicted with Rosacea. In order to determine which treatment method is best for you, you should contact our Chicago skin care specialists at NIMA Skin Institute at (312)266-NIMA (6462) to set up a consultation appointment.
