    Dispelling Misconceptions about Cosmetic Botox

One thing that the media consistently gets right is how shock value can grab a person’s attention.  Recently media reports designed to produce ratings have given a false impression about the safety of the use of Botox in medical procedures.  To set the record straight and to get accurate figures for the safety of Botox, one could simply ask any of the more than thirteen million people in the United States or anyone in the over seventy-five countries that have received aesthetic or medical purpose Botox treatments.

    The Safety of Botox

Dr. Amin, a dermatologist in Chicago, often gets asked about the safety of Botox.  Dr. Amin hopes that accurate information, statistics and figures put the incorrect rumors to rest.  As a board certified Chicago dermatologist, Dr. Amin sees the positive results of properly administered Botox treatments in her patients and can attest to the safety of Botox.

Botox has been approved for medical and cosmetic treatments for nearly a decade now and there has never been a death reported from the use of Botox for cosmetic purposes from a certified, properly trained individual.  What the media is reporting about is the use of Botox in the treatment of juvenile cerebral palsy.  In this treatment, the sick child is given a dose of Botox that is one hundred times greater than what is used in the treatment of wrinkles.

    Medical and Cosmetic Botox

Keep in mind that this treatment for cerebral palsy has not been approved in the United States.  Mortality rates for medical Botox also include patients that may have had other diseases that were determined as the actual cause of death.  The data still had to be recorded under the mortality statistics for Botox because the death happened during or directly after a medical treatment using Botox.  These are the cases that the media has decided to focus on and are misusing the unfortunate deaths as a way to bolster ratings.  Dr. Amin, a board certified dermatologist and other dermatologists around the nation administer Botox in a safe and controlled environment for the purpose of cosmetic improvements.

    Dispelling the Rumors About Botox

Among other rumors that circulate from time to time about the safety of Botox is that it causes botulism.  This simply is not true.  Cosmetic Botox, which is used for treating wrinkles, is a minute amount which is injected into certain facial muscles.  This is a controlled procedure and is not related to the onset of Botulism.  Because the injection site is so controlled and the amount of Botox is controlled; there basically is no way to get Botulism from the procedure.  Botulism is a disease that is not caused by cosmetic Botox injections.

It is important to remember that Botox should only be administered by a medical professional.  Your Chicago dermatologist is trained to administer Botox safely and effectively.
